ANAHEIM, Calif. (Dec. 20, 2017) — A new community center offering help and services to better the lives of neighborhood families opens today at Ponderosa Park.

Known as the Ponderosa Park Family Resource Center, the facility is set to play a big role in the lives of nearby residents, many of them first- or second-generation immigrants.

They’ll be able to get hands-on assistance with parenting, homework, nutrition and job searches, while also having a space to play basketball, take Zumba classes and enjoy family movie nights.

The center is designed to be part of and serve the Ponderosa community, which sits along Orangewood Avenue in between the Platinum Triangle and Anaheim Resort.

Many of the neighborhood’s residents live in older, compact apartments and work in service jobs.

Within walking distance, Ponderosa Park is the neighborhood’s front yard, while the family resource center provides much-needed help for working families.

Offerings at the center include:

  • Family and personal counseling
  • Parenting classes
  • Healthy nutrition and cooking classes
  • Women, Infant and Children Program nutrition assistance
  • CalFresh nutrition assistance
  • Utility payment assistance program
  • English classes
  • Teen programs
  • Sports, fitness and dance programs
  • Health and wellness classes
  • Afterschool homework help
  • Family movie nights
  • Field trips
  • Legal aid referrals
  • Resume, job search help
  • Translation assistance, help filling out forms

The 18,400-square-foot center also includes a gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and other uses, activity and meeting rooms, office space and an outdoor movie area. It replaces Ponderosa Park’s older, outgrown center, which dates back to 2000.

The community center is at the heart of a $16 million, multiyear renovation at the park that also includes a skate park, playground, picnic areas, water play area, outdoor plaza, restrooms and fitness stations.

The project builds on other improvements to the neighborhood, including a new school and library built in 2010.

The family resource center and park improvements stem from five years of working with residents to bring upgrades to one of Anaheim’s most used parks.

Residents shared what they wanted at their 9-acre park and community center.

The park renovations are funded by fees paid by developers in the nearby Platinum Triangle around Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

Ponderosa Park Family Resource Center is at 2100 S. Haster St. For questions, call (714) 765-5155.
