ANAHEIM, CA – In March 2016, APD Sexual Assault detectives investigated a report of a 13 year old girl who had been sexually assaulted in late 2014 by a then 26 year old male. The incident began when the suspect, Moonjun Kim, began communicating with the victim on the text messaging application “Friends Talk.” Kim ultimately met the victim at a mall in Irvine and drove her to a residence in Orange County where he engaged in sexual intercourse with her.
As the investigation progressed, detectives created a profile on the “Friends Talk” application and began communicating with Kim while posing as a 14 year old girl. During the communications, Kim sent several photographs of his penis and offered to meet the girl for the purpose of having sexual intercourse. On March 29, 2016, Kim drove to Chaparral Park in Anaheim, where he believed he would be meeting the 14 year old girl to engage in sexual intercourse. Kim was arrested without incident when he arrived at the park for Lewd Acts with a Child 14 or under, Luring of a Child with Intent to Commit Specified Crime, Meeting a Minor to Commit Lewd Conduct, and Distributing, Pornography to a Minor with Intent to Engage in Sexual Conduct.
Kim brought with him a bag of sexual accoutrements, including sexual toys, condoms, and lubricants. He also had professional still and video recording equipment. Kim subsequently admitted he came to Anaheim with the specific intent of meeting the 14 year old girl to have sexual intercourse and to video record the encounter. Kim also admitted he has engaged in similar encounters with females he knows to be underage. Kim was using the applications Friends Talk, LINE, We Talk, Kakao Talk, Facebook and Skype to communicate with potential victims and always used the profile names of MJ or Jun. We encourage anyone with information regarding potential additional victims to contact Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS or by email at www.occrimestoppers.org.
Law enforcement reminds parents of the importance of being aware of their children’s’ online presence and taking an active role in auditing their activities.
Kim is being held at Orange County Jail on $300,000 bail.
