PD Press Release Image.jpg

ANAHEIM, CA – It is with great sadness the Anaheim Police Department announces the passing of K9 Bruno at 5:55 am this morning. Bruno was admitted to Yorba Regional Anaheim Hospital late Saturday afternoon after experiencing medical complications related to injuries he sustained in a line of duty injury just over two years ago. Bruno underwent emergency surgery Saturday night and was unable to recover. His organs began failing early this morning and the difficult decision was made to end his suffering. The entire Anaheim community mourns with Bruno’s family.

Bruno made international headlines when he was shot on March 20, 2014 while assisting SWAT officers with a search for an armed suspect who had fired upon probation officers. Bruno was shot in the jaw and the chest. He underwent multiple surgeries and made a miraculous recovery thanks to the valiant efforts of many veterinarians and animal service workers. Bruno retired from the Anaheim Police Department in May 2014 after six years of dedicated service and has been enjoying retirement with his handler, Officer RJ Young and his family.

Bruno became somewhat of a folk hero following his shooting and recovery and has made guest appearances on a number of television programs. He is the subject of a children’s book, The Adventures of Bruno and Grace, written by Officer Young’s wife. Bruno was scheduled to be the Grand Marshal of the America Rides event this coming Saturday.
