Two new reading programs for kids at the Anaheim Public Library!

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Dec. 28, 2016) — Anaheim Public Library is offering two new, incentive-based reading programs. From Dec. 19 to Feb. 25, students from kindergarten to sixth grade can pick up a Winter Break Reading Challenge activity sheet, complete it and return it for a special prize. The activity sheets contain 10 activities that range from reading with a family member, attending special library programs and reading e-books. Once complete, students can return their activity logs for a special prize or to be entered into a special raffle. There is no limit to the number of activity logs that a student can complete.

For young children up to age 4, parents are encouraged to enroll in “Sowing Seeds to Raise a Reader: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” reading program. One thousand books sounds like an enormous amount, but if you read just one book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years!

This incentive-based program encourages parents to sing, read and talk to their young children to aid in language development and early reading skills.  Activities are tracked using bookmark style reading logs. After 100 reading related activities are complete, reading logs can be returned to the library for a special age appropriate prize. Families may enroll at any time during the year. Incentives for this program were generously sponsored by the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library and the Anaheim Municipal Employee Association.
