New Anaheim Substation Provides Power And Visual Appeal
ANAHEIM, CA - (March 31, 2009) - Imagine a new electric substation that is not only smaller and more efficient, but visually appealing.  That vision became a reality today as Anaheim Public Utilities unveiled Anaheim Substation, an electric switching station that utilizes state-of-the-art Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) technology that is conveniently housed within a beautiful building reflective of Anaheim’s rich history.

This new substation provides electrical service to Anaheim’s downtown area and City Hall, and serves as back up supply to Anaheim’s Resort area as well.  Anaheim Substation will provide electrical service to more than 15,000 customers and more importantly, has the capacity to expand its service as development grows.

“The new Anaheim Substation is an example of meeting the sustainable needs for energy, land use, and aesthetic beauty,” said Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle.  “Today’s new technologies allow us to provide for the needs of our residents and businesses on a smaller footprint than older technology, and within a building which also increases the life of the technology.  Through this project developed by Anaheim’s Public Utilities, we hope other cities will see that practicality and aesthetic beauty can indeed go hand-in-hand.”

Since the GIS technology uses 30% less space, the City was able to construct the substation inside a building, unlike conventional substations that are traditionally built out in the open.  Additionally, the GIS technology requires less maintenance—allowing eight years between maintenance cycles instead of the typical three years.

This new substation is consistent with the City’s commitment to preserving and enhancing Anaheim’s aesthetic appeal.  Anaheim Substation was designed to replicate the architecture of Anaheim’s old Light & Water Works, the City’s second electric generation plant that was built in the early 1900s.  As an added enhancement, all of the overhead power circuits nearby to the new Anaheim Substation were placed underground.

Anaheim Substation, located on Santa Ana St. near Anaheim Blvd., is the City’s 12th substation and third to utilize the GIS technology.
