Anaheim Mayor's Techscholar Program Winners to be Honored In a Ceremony on May 19
Winners to receive free laptop computers and internet service
ANAHEIM, CA - (May 13, 2009) - The City of Anaheim and Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle will honor 41 high school students with free laptop computers and internet service as winners of this year’s Mayor’s TechScholar Program. The ceremony will be held Tuesday, May 19 at 3 p.m., at the Anaheim Downtown Community Center.

“Hard-working and determined high school students should be rewarded for their efforts,” said Mayor Pringle. “The Mayor’s TechScholar Program is one avenue for high school students residing in Anaheim to receive the resources they need to succeed in their lives and their careers. This program is special to me, and I am grateful to our sponsor partners for continuing their support of Anaheim’s future leaders.”

The Mayor’s TechScholar Program was established in 2006 by Mayor Pringle to provide free laptop computers for selected students. The students also receive up to two years of free internet service, compliments of Time Warner Cable. Since its inception, more than 165 students have benefited from the program.

All sophomore or junior high schools students who reside in Anaheim were eligible to enter the competition. The students selected as this year’s winners completed the application and wrote on this selected essay topic: Anaheim’s unofficial motto or marketing slogan is: “Where the world comes to live, work and play.” If you were to write a new slogan for the City of Anaheim, what would it be?” The students were asked to explain their answers and include an idea on how this concept could be marketed to the public.

The Mayor’s TechScholar Program is sponsored this year by Time Warner Cable, AT&T, EDS, and Anaheim Public Utilities. For more information please contact Ruth Ruiz, Public Information Specialist, City of Anaheim, at 714-765-5060 or ruiz@anaheim.net.
