City of Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle will honor 53 high school students with laptop computers and internet service as winners of this year’s Mayor’s TechScholar program.  The Mayor’s TechScholar program awards qualifying and winning students based on their essay writing skills.  Since its inception, more than 200 students have benefited from the Mayor’s TechScholar program.

May 18, 3 p.m.
Anaheim Downtown Community Center
250 E. Center St.
Anaheim, CA 92805

In addition, the students will be recognized at that evening’s City Council meeting, taking place at 5 p.m. at City Hall (200 S. Anaheim Blvd.).

Mayor Curt Pringle, City of Anaheim
Lorri Galloway, Anaheim Councilmember
Marcie Edwards, Assistant City Manager and Anaheim Public Utilities General Manager
The Honorable Andrew J. Guilford, U.S. District Court, Central District
Kristy Hennessey, Vice President, Government Relations, Time Warner Cable
Richard Porras, Executive Director, External Affairs, AT&T

The Mayor’s TechScholar program was established in 2006 by Mayor Pringle to provide free laptop computers for students based on qualification and essay writing skills.  The students also receive up to two years of free internet service, compliments of Time Warner Cable.

College-bound high school students in their sophomore or junior years attending a public or private high school and residing in Anaheim were eligible to apply.  This year’s essay question embraced technology by challenging the students to describe an app idea (mobile or Web-based) that will make Anaheim an even better place.

The Mayor’s TechScholar program is sponsored this year by Time Warner, AT&T, Anaheim Public Utilities, HP, the Samueli Foundation, and Pricon.  This program is fully funded by private donations as a service to the community.
