ANAHEIM, CA - (November 16, 2010) - Anaheim Public Utilities broke ground today to mark the construction of the new Water Recycling Demonstration Facility at City Hall. This 100,000-gallon-per-day-capacity treatment facility will treat wastewater to meet State reuse standards, and then provide the recycled water for a variety of non-potable uses in the vicinity. It is predicted to save up to 35 million gallons of imported water a year – enough to serve about 220 households – and to provide the equivalent of approximately $70,000 in annual water cost savings.

Phase 1 of the project will produce up to 50,000 gallons of recycled water per day for toilet and urinal flushing and landscape irrigation in and around City Hall. Future phases will increase production to 100,000 gallons per day, which will be available to local City parks, schools, and future small developments that express interest.
The site plan will incorporate a plaza, with seating areas, a fountain, and plants, adjacent to the Water Recycling Facility. The design will also integrate a variety of "green" components, including a roof runoff, porous pavement, and drought-tolerant landscaping. It will support self-guided tours for visitors through interpretative and educational signage, and attempt to promote public awareness about California’s current drought conditions.
This Water Recycling Demonstration Facility will be constructed on a smaller scale than traditional water recycling systems. This plant will require less piping to collect and transport sewage to the facility and convey recycled water to the customer – which means less expense and less energy.
“This small plant carries a lot of potential,” said Anaheim Public Utilities General Manager Marcie Edwards. “Alternative water recycling technologies and the conservation techniques demonstrated here will enable our City  to develop more recycled water for the region - reducing our dependence on imported water and promoting robust economic growth and development.” 

Construction on the Water Recycling Demonstration Project will begin January 2011. It is scheduled to be completed January 2012, with operation beginning March 2012.
