|Anaheim Wins Two Awards From The American Planning Association|
ANAHEIM, CA - (May 13, 2011) - The City of Anaheim recently received two awards from the American Planning Association (APA) Orange Section, in recognition of Colony Park's quality and innovative design, as well as for the City's Planning Permit Assistance Counter customer service. The awards were presented at the APA's 2011 Awards Ceremony on May 4.
"It is an honor to have our city recognized by leading urban planning professionals for our efforts to improve service and to beautify our landscape," said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait. "Both APA awards are a tribute to Anaheim's commitment to building a better community for our residents, business customers and visitors."
The City's Community Services Department and Redevelopment Agency, together with Brookfield Homes, received the Neighborhood Planning Award of Merit for Colony Park.
Colony Park (located at 501 E. Water St., Anaheim 92805) was designed to reflect the City's historical roots as well as to offer local residents a place to gather with friends and family. Located within the Brookfield Homes Colony Park community, the park offers a history of Anaheim through interpretative artwork and historical references. For example, the interactive elements include water to represent the Santa Ana River, a large boulder to represent the San Bernardino Mountains, water flowing through stainless steel runnels to signify the smaller agricultural canals, and orange groves of Anaheim's original Colony. Other artistic elements include a representation of the original Colony and downtown structures. Artists Haddad|Drugan of Seattle, Wash. designed the historical elements of the park, while the overall landscape architecture was provided by The Collaborative West.
The Planning Department's Permit Assistance Counter was awarded the Outstanding Planning Award in the Best Practices Category.
The mission of Anaheim's Permit Assistance Counter (PAC) is to provide planning resources and efficient procedures that help residents, property owners, businesses and developers accomplish their goals. PAC staff members have sought out and implemented more productive and efficient processes based on customer insight and feedback. Different software programs are also utilized to improve service.
