ANAHEIM, CA - (July 12, 2011) - September 11 has become a day to honor the innocent men and women who lost their lives on that tragic day in 2001. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the attacks on our country, and the City of Anaheim is honoring the fallen as well as those who serve our community and country through September 11: Service and Remembrance, a two-month time of reflection and action in honor of those who continue to fight for this country’s freedoms. September 11: Service and Remembrance begins today through Sept. 11.

September 11: Service and Remembrance will offer information via a special section on the City’s website, www.anaheim.net, as well as event and activity details, which includes information for a Military Banner ceremony on September 8, a volunteer day on Sept. 10, and a remembrance service to take place at Pearson Park Amphitheatre on Sept. 11.

“There is no greater sacrifice than to give one's life for another. It is a sobering thought, yet men and women across our country willingly do this so we can continue to live in freedom,” said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait. “On Sept. 11, 2001 thousands of innocent lives were lost, and thousands more lives shattered as a result. It is our hope that as a city we can offer our gratitude now through September 11 through our actions of remembrance and volunteerism.”

The City’s website, www.anaheim.net, will serve as the resource page for all information, events and activities during September 11: Service and Remembrance. Information includes spotlights on the various City-organized first responder groups, a pledge to volunteer service and how to volunteer, and information on the events to take place during these two months. Citizens are encouraged to visit this page often to learn more about efforts and activities in the City of Anaheim in which they can participate.

Sept. 8 – Military Banner Ceremony
The City of Anaheim created the Military Banner program in the fall of 2009 as a way to recognize Anaheim residents currently serving in the military. On Sept. 8, 11 Anaheim residents currently serving will be honored with the unveiling of banners which will be hung from street light poles throughout the City. Sept. 10 – A Day of Service and Pledge to Volunteer
During September 11: Service and Remembrance, Mayor Tait is calling for citizens to pledge any amount of time to an organization or cause of their choice. While volunteering is always encouraged for Anaheim residents as part of Mayor Tait's "Hi Neighbor" initiative, on Saturday, Sept. 10, Mayor Tait specifically calls residents to volunteer in remembrance of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Also on Saturday, Sept. 10 a First Responder Expo featuring emergency operations volunteer groups will be held at the Anaheim Fire Department/Orange County Fire Authority North Net Training Center, 2400 E. Orangewood Ave. Groups participating at the First Responder Expo will provide information on how residents can expand their emergency preparedness. Here, residents will also learn how to prepare for emergencies and how to support our neighbors in times of need.

Sept. 11 – Remembrance Service at Pearson Park Amphitheatre
The week of September 11 will culminate in a remembrance service at Pearson Park Amphitheatre, 401 N. Lemon St. The remembrance service will begin at 12:30 p.m., and will include former Anaheim resident and Katella High School graduate Brad Burlingame. Brad is the brother of Charles 'Chic' Burlingame, the pilot of American Airlines flight 77, which was crashed by terrorists into the Pentagon the morning of Sept.11. Charles Burlingame was a 1967 graduate of Anaheim High School.
