|Anaheim Convention Center And Anaheim Public Utilities Partner To Bring One Of The Largest Rooftop Solar Panel Installations In North America|
ANAHEIM, CA - (August 19, 2013) - Southern California’s sunny skies provide more than great weather and enjoyable outdoor living here in Anaheim. Beginning mid 2014, Anaheim residents and guests will receive the benefits of a solar power project thanks to a partnership between the Anaheim Convention Center and Anaheim Public Utilities, as approved by the Anaheim City Council.
This solar project will be the largest on the roof of a convention center in North America and will be in the top five largest roof mounted systems in North America. Approximately 8,700 solar panels covering 300,000 square feet will be installed on the Anaheim Convention Center rooftop over Exhibit Halls A, B and C. Construction is anticipated to begin in January 2014 with completion expected during the summer.
Anaheim Public Utilities will lease the space and produce power equivalent of 16% of the Convention Center’s annual electric needs, or enough for approximately 550 homes. This solar panel project will add to Anaheim Public Utilities’ environmental sustainability portfolio, and will also serve to keep Anaheim’s electric rates the lowest in Orange County. The project will produce energy at almost half the cost of other renewable energy sources. Where other electric providers may purchase renewable energy, Anaheim residents can be assured their Utility is committed to cost-effective measures to benefit all.
“This is another exciting opportunity to add to reliable and clean energy for Anaheim Public Utility’s customers, and is in response to the State’s mandate that utility companies add renewable energy resources to their portfolio. Instead of purchasing power elsewhere and paying top rates, producing our own power will help us to keep customer rates down for years to come,” said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait.
“We are pleased that the Anaheim Convention Center is partnering with Anaheim Public Utilities to supply affordable and reliable energy source for our residents, businesses and guests. The LEED certified Anaheim Convention Center maintains a commitment to sustainability through our recycling program, on-site composting facility, rooftop herb garden, and more, and we are pleased to add the largest convention center rooftop solar panel project in North America to our campus,” said Tom Morton, Executive Director, Anaheim Convention, Sports and Entertainment.
Anaheim Public Works will oversee this $5.7 million dollar construction project awarded to Borrego Solar, Inc. at this past Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
