City Of Anaheim Alerts Residents Of Impersonators And Fraud Efforts
ANAHEIM, CA - (January 3, 2014) - Anaheim Public Utilities and the City’s Public Works department are alerting residents about the potential for impersonators representing Anaheim employees and contractors working for the City in different scenarios.

Individuals impersonating Anaheim employees or City contractors have contacted homeowners indicating that tree maintenance in the homeowner’s backyard needs to be performed on behalf of Anaheim Public Utilities. Please note that any landscape contractor working for the City of Anaheim will have proper identification and provide it upon request. If concerned, residents are encouraged to call the Public Works information line at 714-765-6860 and the City will confirm if work is being planned for your neighborhood.

In addition, Anaheim Public Utilities customers have also recently received calls from individuals impersonating Anaheim employees requesting over-the-phone payments, or showing up at homes claiming to be Anaheim employees or City contractors to replace equipment. The impersonators are using what’s called “spoofing software,” which allows them to falsely display Anaheim Public Utilities’ name and phone number on telephone caller ID systems. These are not authorized calls or visits by Anaheim Public Utilities.

Oftentimes customers are asked to purchase a “Green Dot MoneyPak”—which can be purchased at local stores—for the dollar amount being demanded, and are then asked to make payment over the phone with the MoneyPak number. This is not a City of Anaheim practice.

As a reminder, Anaheim Public Utilities representatives will never make unsolicited calls to customers to collect utility payments, nor will staff visit residents to solicit payment. Customers can pay their utility bills by any of the following methods:

  • By mail to Anaheim Public Utilities, P.O. Box 3222, Anaheim, CA 92803-3222
  • In-person at Anaheim West Tower, 201 S. Anaheim Blvd., First Floor, Anaheim
  • Through the authorized and automated phone system, by calling 714-765-3300
  • Securely online at www.anaheim.net/utilities

To verify if a call or visitor to your home is that of a City of Anaheim employee, or if you suspect fraud, please call 714-765-3300.
