|AIR QUALITY ADVISORY; ANAHEIM COOLING CENTERS OFFER RELIEF FROM THE HEAT|
ANAHEIM, CA - (May 16, 2014) -
The City of Anaheim is providing this Air Quality Advisory from the South Coast Air Quality Management District:
Ongoing brush fires in San Diego County and flows from the south have caused smoke to move into the South Coast Air Basin this morning, especially in Orange County and into Los Angeles County. Some elevated particulate concentrations are occurring as well as smoke odors. Smoke dispersion is expected to improve as the onshore breezes return and vertical mixing increases by early afternoon. However, smoke that has accumulated offshore may also move inland with the sea breeze today.
Areas directly impacted by smoke and ash may experience air quality in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range, or higher. Depending on fire and weather conditions, the portions of the South Coast Air Basin where smoke impacts and Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups air quality are most likely to occur include Orange County.
In any area directly impacted by smoke: Everyone should avoid any vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion; people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should remain indoors. Keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent bringing additional smoke inside. To avoid worsening thehealth effects of wildfire smoke, don’t use indoor or outdoor wood-burning appliances, including fireplaces.
In addition, the City of Anaheim offers 10 indoor Cooling Centers to offer residents relief from the smoke and heat. Please call the location nearest you for hours of operation.
Brookhurst Community Center, 2271 W. Crescent Ave. (714) 765-3373
During times of extreme heat and air quality advisories, make sure to remain hydrated by drinking water, and check often on those family members, neighbors and friends who may be at risk.
