|ANAHEIM ANNOUNCES PILOT PUBLIC SAFETY BOARD MEMBERS|
ANAHEIM, CA - (August 8, 2014) - In February 2014, the City of Anaheim announced the formation of a pilot Public Safety Board, to be comprised of community members who will review items such as fire and police budgets, staffing levels, service delivery mechanisms, police and fire policies and practices, and certain critical incidents.
Today, Anaheim Interim City Manager Paul Emery announced the nine community members who will serve on the pilot Public Safety Board:
Board members were selected using a lottery system reflecting the four existing neighborhood council areas: West, Central, East and South with one member being selected at large. More than 80 Anaheim residents applied to serve on the Board. The members are scheduled to hold their first quarterly meeting this fall, and the community is encouraged to attend and share comments. Meeting dates and locations will be announced at a later date.
The Board members will work in conjunction with an external auditor, who will serve as a liaison and provide independent analysis and law enforcement best practice information. Together, the Public Safety Board and external auditor will develop policy recommendations for consideration by the City Manager, as well as the Police and Fire Chiefs. Additionally, pilot Public Safety Board members will receive training prior to holding their first quarterly meeting, anticipated this fall.
The City of Anaheim has long offered its residents the opportunity to serve on a number of boards and commissions in order to establish greater communications and to receive recommendations on city services. In addition, Anaheim Police Department and Anaheim Fire & Rescue currently utilize several avenues by which to receive input including active participation in community meetings and outreach activities. The pilot Public Safety Board is an additional body to the City’s existing community public safety engagement efforts; specifically, it will provide residents another opportunity to become more involved in the delivery of public safety services, as well as increase transparency.
