Bob Hernandez was elected to the Anaheim City Council in November 2002 after a 38-year career serving the citizens of Anaheim in the Anaheim Fire Department. Hernandez brings an array of community service to the Council. He has served on the Anaheim Firefighters Association as treasurer and board member at large, as well as a member of the Anaheim Firefighters' Political Action Committee. He has a long history of service to the community in such organizations as the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, Western Medical Centers Foundation Board of Trustees, Latino Peace Officers Association, and many other charitable organizations. He was a founding member of the Downtown Anaheim Association and is co-founder of the Anaheim Nutcracker Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting Ceremony in downtown Anaheim. Hernandez received an Associate of Arts Degree in Fire Science from Santa Ana College and has attended many classes in Emergency Management, specializing in logistics and is rated as a Chief of Logistics by the State of California Governors Office of Emergency Services. In 1994, after the Northridge earthquake, Hernandez had an opportunity to use his knowledge and skills serving with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (F.E.M.A.) in the Pasadena disaster field office. Hernandez first came to Anaheim when he was appointed to firefighter in March 1963. He rose through the ranks and retired as a Fire Captain in 2001. He is a former long distance runner who has run many full and half marathons. He has two grown children who attended Anaheim public schools, one of whom still lives in the area.
