ANAHEIM INTRODUCES WEB-BASED, SOLAR MAPPING TOOL New online tool maps the solar potential of residential and commercial rooftops
ANAHEIM, CA - (July 20, 2009) - Anaheim Public Utilities has completed its first phase of the City's solar mapping portal, Anaheim Solar Map. Beginning with three one-mile square sections of the City, this automated web based solar map enables users to quickly and accurately assess the solar potential of their homes or businesses located throughout Anaheim. Users can also view information provided by Anaheim customers with an existing commercial or residential solar installation - the location, solar type, and installation size of existing panels can be found throughout the city.

Anaheim Solar Map also provides information about whether the user's location is suitable for solar energy production, while an integrated calculator determines the potential energy cost savings of installing a solar panel at their home or business. Users can also read about the steps needed to install a solar energy panel, and learn about financial incentives provided by Anaheim Public Utilities to assist them in reducing their initial installation costs.

"Solar mapping is the type of innovative idea that will give our residents and businesses more options when it comes to renewable energy," said City of Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle. "Anaheim Solar Map is an intelligent approach, and we look forward to expanding its reach in the future. It will give us better information for not only saving energy, but also reduce costs for those who choose to embrace solar energy."

The City of Anaheim's mapping portal utilizes CH2M HILL's S.A.F.E.™ technology to estimate the solar potential of a rooftop by measuring elements of a rooftop structure (including air conditioning units and ducting), the direction of the sun, shadows cast by other structures, and the slant of the roof. The S.A.F.E.™ technology also provides optimal estimates of future solar installations, reducing the need for costly on-site assessments.

Dave Herrmann, Project Manager for CH2M HILL's Enterprise Management Solutions, hopes the technology will encourage greater sustainability within the community: "As we continue to add features and functionality to this solar portal, as well as include additional portions of the city, our hope is that the residents of Anaheim will become active participants in this virtual solar community."

In addition to this Solar Map initiative, Anaheim is a leader in pursuing sustainable partnerships with private agencies to provide tools and resources to its community. As part of the Anaheim Center for New Energy Technologies (AC-NET), integrating CH2M HILL's S.A.F.E. technology compliments AC-NET's vision to embrace technological advancements that encourages the community to be more energy and water efficient.
