ANAHEIM, CA - (March 7, 2012) -
Anaheim Public Utilities yesterday dedicated the City’s first 200-megawatt natural gas power plant. The Canyon Power Plant is capable of producing enough electricity for more than 150,000 residential customers—more than half of Anaheim’s population. And by creating this power locally, Anaheim will save at least $7 million each year by not having to purchase more expensive power from out of state. The Canyon Power Plant also integrates a number of sustainable elements that will help the Facility to receive Silver LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Some of these elements include using 100% high-purity recycled water from the Orange County Water District’s Groundwater Replenishment System to cool the four commercial-sized gas turbines; thermal energy storage technology that refrigerates air during the night, then uses the cold air to cool the Plant Operations Building during the daytime; solar panels on the rooftop of control room to capture the sun’s rays, and California-friendly landscaping adorns the sound wall around the Plant to help minimize excess sounds.
“By creating this power locally, our Anaheim residents and businesses will continue to receive the benefits of the lowest electric rates in Orange County, making Anaheim a stronger and more resilient place to live,” said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait.
“I am very proud of the team whose vision and foresight brought a power plant of this size and complexity to fruition,” said Anaheim Public Utilities General Manager Marcie Edwards. “This Facility was built not only with innovative technology and sustainable features, but it will also provide secure, reliable power to our Anaheim community.”
