Learning Skills

Fire Explorers learn:

  • Firefighting skills
  • Hose lay evolutions
  • Ladder techniques
  • Salvage operations
  • Wild land firefighting procedures
  • Proper use of tools and equipment
  • Basic first aid
  • Leadership skills that can be applied to any career

Activities

Fire Explorers meet 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every other Tuesday, and as scheduled on weekends. After Explorers have met the minimum requirements, they have the opportunity to experience what the job really requires through the department’s Ride-Along Program. During a ride along, Explorers work side by side with professional Firefighters and respond to actual fires and emergencies. Whether it’s riding on the Engines, Ladder Trucks, or performing an inspection there will always be an activity that is scheduled for their experience.
