Center of Hope apartments bring housing with help and support for formerly homeless

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2023) — More than 70 residents are set to start moving into Anaheim’s newest affordable apartment community as part of our city’s leading efforts to address homelessness.

The new apartments are part of the Center of Hope, a collaboration between the city of Anaheim and The Salvation Army.

Center of Hope is our city’s comprehensive response to homelessness and brings together emergency shelter, transitional housing, substance abuse recovery and work programs in one campus.

Later this month, residents from the Anaheim Emergency Shelter at Center of Hope, an Anaheim motel converted to emergency housing and other formerly homeless will start moving into the new apartments.

Along with furnished apartments, residents will get the help they need to live a stable life, including case management, access to healthcare and substance abuse treatment, help with life skills and access to work opportunities.

“No longer can just a roof and four walls solve homelessness,” Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken said. “Mental health support, life skills and other services are what keep people housed, stable and successful. Center of Hope will deliver on all of these.”

Residents at the Center of Hope apartments will pay minimal, affordable rents equaling about 30 percent of any income they have. Waivers are available for those without income.

The city provided a $2 million construction loan and is providing 50 rent assistance vouchers for Center of Hope.

The county of Orange is also partnering on Center of Hope with funding, housing vouchers and support staff.

The goal of the Center of Hope apartments is to help residents become stable with work and eventually move into their own independent apartment or other housing of their own.

The apartments are part of Anaheim's larger citywide efforts to address homelessness with daily social worker and mental health clinician outreach, specially trained police, emergency shelter, drug treatment and other services and affordable apartments, including those with homeless-recovery assistance.
